The final LUCS-PACE research workshop on energy informatics

The LUCS and PACE INTPART projects jointly held a PhD research workshop for partners at the Technical University of Munich (TuM) from Wednesday, 2nd of March, to Friday, 4th of March, 2022.
Around 30 people came from Germany, France and Norway to attend the workshop. The main goal of the workshop was to provide opportunities for collaborations between partners through PhD students presenting their research. 17 PhD students from the partner institutions competently showcased their work.
LUCS (Learning to Understand and Control nation-wide Smart grids of energy prosumers) and PACE (Partnership for joint Curriculum Development and Research in Energy Informatics) are collaborative projects that are both funded by the Norwegian Research Council’s INTPART (International Partnerships for Excellent Education, Research and Innovation) program.
Facility tours and guest speaker
René Schwermer, PhD student at TuM and participant in the PACE project, led the workshop and organised the facility tours. The participants were shown the LRZ (The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre) High Performance Computing facility with its innovative cooling and energy management systems. They also had the opportunity to learn about the possibilities provided by the Combined Smart Energy Systems triple (electricity, heating, and communication/control) emulation laboratory and tour the facility.
Monika Hermanns, Economic Counsellor at the Royal Norwegian Embassy Berlin, gave a fascinating, and very timely, talk about current German-Norwegian collaborations within the energy sector along with future opportunities.
Summer school for PhD and MSc students
LUCS and PACE will be running a summer school at the end of August, hosted by the University of Oslo (UiO) at Sundvollen. It will be open for PhD students and selected MSc students in the related degree programs. This will be the final major event for LUCS. More information will be available soon.
Last year’s summer school, titled “Green Computing meets Green energy”, was held in Lille, France.
The LUCS and PACE projects
LUCS is a collaborative project between SimulaMet, University of Oslo (UiO), the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of TU Berlin, and the German Turkish Advanced Research Centre for ICT Berlin. SimulaMet is the coordinator of the project. The goal is to provide knowledge and experience that will assist masters and early doctoral students with experiment design and performance analyses of smart grid systems.

PACE is a collaborative project between research groups at University of Stavanger (UiS), University of Oslo (UiO), Technical University of Munich (TuM), and the University of Lille. UiS coordinates the project. The goal is to strengthen the research and educational activity on energy informatics at the partner institutions.
